SUMMARY:African Genomics Short Course
DESCRIPTION:African Genomics Short Course\n\n\n30 November–10 December 2025\n\n\nFaculty of Health Sciences\, University of Cape Town\, South Africa\nFrom origins to discovery and innovation: Strengthening genomics expertise and leadership in Africa.\n\nGenomics is rapidly transforming biomedical research\, health\, and innovation globally. In Africa\, growing investment in infrastructure\, data\, and networks has created momentum to harness genomics to address local and global health challenges\, biodiversity\, and development. However\, achieving this potential requires coordinated efforts to build research capacity\, ensure equitable data generation and access\, and strengthen African leadership across the genomics ecosystem. \nThis inaugural short course is a flagship collaboration between the African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG)\, the University of Cape Town (UCT)\, faculty members from African universities\, Wellcome Connecting Science\, The Jackson Laboratory\, John Hopkins University and a growing network of regional and global partners committed to advancing genomics in Africa. Designed to reflect the continent’s pivotal role in the history and future of genomics\, this intensive 10-day residential course brings together early and mid-career researchers from across Africa to build interdisciplinary knowledge\, strengthen practical skills\, and develop leadership capacity to advance genomics research. Participants will critically explore foundational and emerging topics in genomics\, engage in hands-on analysis using accessible tools and datasets\, and examine case studies rooted in African-led initiatives. The course will also highlight ethical research practices\, with a focus on local and global contexts and how research can be applied equitably. \nThrough practical sessions\, expert-led seminars\, peer exchange\, and project-based learning\, the course will also provide a platform to strengthen networks\, nurture innovation\, and support participants to become catalysts for sustainable capacity development in their home institutions and countries. \nTarget audience\nThis course is aimed at researchers and clinical professionals based in Africa who are actively engaged in genomics\, bioinformatics\, or closely related fields. It is particularly suited for early to mid-career scientists\, including advanced PhD students\, postdoctoral researchers\, and healthcare professionals (e.g. clinicians\, genetic counsellors\, lab scientists) contributing to genomics research or its application in healthcare. Ideal candidates will have some hands-on experience in generating or analysing genomic data\, and a demonstrated commitment to strengthening research and training capacity within their institutions or regions.

SUMMARY:Environmental DNA (eDNA) Training for Africa and the Adjacent Island States
DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\n\nEnvironmental DNA (eDNA) sampling and analysis have become an increasingly popular tool for studying biodiversity and monitoring ecosystems. It provides a relatively easy\, non-invasive method to scan environments; estimate number of species\, assess biodiversity\, and monitor changes in a community without having to collect organism samples. Additionally\, eDNA has the potential to inform on the movements and habitat associations of endangered/rare species\, migratory species\, water quality\, detecting and tracking invasive species\, harmful algal blooms\, pathogens\, and parasites. eDNA uses traces of genetic materials that organisms leave behind in water\, soil\, or air. Regardless of its wide application\, knowledge of this technique is still underused in several parts of the world\, such as in Africa. Marine ecosystems of Africa and the adjacent island states are teeming with biodiversity\, including 439 key marine biodiversity areas. These ecosystems are facing significant threats from climate change\, overexploitation\, invasive species\, urbanization\, and other factors\, as such\, impact on biodiversity. Therefore\, there is an urgent need to accelerate the understanding of African biodiversity patterns and monitor ecosystems more efficiently. Implementing eDNA techniques in biodiversity assessment in African countries is a promising opportunity to maximize the conservation and management of marine life. \n\nIn this context\, this blended training aims to provide participants with a comprehensive theoretical understanding of environmental DNA (eDNA) and its applications in environmental sciences. It will cover all relevant aspects from eDNA sampling\, laboratory and bioinformatic analysis\, data analysis of results and possible application. The participants will learn about the origins of eDNA\, how it enters the environment\, and its significance in measuring biodiversity. The training will give an overview of eDNA\, including its definition and different ecosystems where it can be studied with a specific focus on marine ecosystems. \nVenue \nUniversity of Ghana \nLearning outcomes \nBy the end of the course\, the participants are expected to have: \n\nIncreased understanding of the eDNA technology and its practical application.\nEnhanced skills in the collection and preservation of eDNA samples.\nPractical knowledge and skills in the extraction of eDNA samples.\nInsights on the analysis of eDNA data\, and use of bioinformatics tools.\nKnowledge of utilization of eDNA technique in assessing marine biodiversity and monitoring ecosystems.\n\nTarget audience \nThe training is focused on ocean practitioners from West and North African countries\, including Early Ocean Career Professionals (ECOPs) and mid-career ocean scientists interested in and needing to use eDNA in their scientific or technical work. \nPre-requisites \nParticipants must: \n\nHave prior knowledge of marine biodiversity sampling and monitoring.\nBring their laptop.\nA working knowledge of English.\nApplicants must be from West or North Africa.\n\nCourse content \nModule 1: Introduction to eDNA \nModule 2: Molecular methods for eDNA \nModule 3: Bioinformatics and Data Management \nLanguage of instruction: English \nCourse Duration\, Synchronous Sessions\, and Format \nThe course will take place face-to-face between 3 to 7 November\, 2025\, with a duration of approximately 40 hours. \nThe course has an online learning component to be completed before the onsite classes of approximately 12h. \nParticipants will be required to: \n\nComplete online self-paced learning activities before the onsite classes.\nFamiliarize themselves with the documentation and methods shared by the group previously.\n\nInstructors \nEdem Mahu \nSammy Wambua \nAngela Ayiku \nPhyllis Amamoo \nOrganizers \nThis course is organized by UNESCO IOC IOC Sub Commission for Africa & the Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA) with the support of the UNESCO IOC OceanTeacher Global Academy RTC Belgium and RTC Ghana (University of Ghana)\, and co-sponsored by the Ocean Decade Capacity Development Facility. The online resources used in this course were created by the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS\, part of UNESCO-IOC) within the Pacific Islands Marine bioinvasions Alert Network (PacMAN) project\, and adapted by local experts for this training.\n\n\nApplication process and selection criteria \n\nOTGA online application form.
