Exciting Pre-Symposium Event: eDNA Think Tank

September 25 @ 08:00 - September 27 @ 17:00

Black in Marine Science (BIMS), in partnership with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), will host an upcoming eDNA Think Tank in Mombasa, Kenya!

This interactive event will take place from September 25th–27th, 2025 right before the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) Symposium. Sessions will be held at the KMFRI facilities, offering participants a unique opportunity to tour their labs, delve into past research, and collaborate with members of the vibrant BIMS network.

What to Expect at the Think Tank:

This immersive think tank is designed to foster interactive learning and collaboration, focusing on key aspects of environmental DNA (eDNA) and biodiversity assessment:

  • eDNA Sample Collection and Laboratory Methods: Gain practical insights into best practices for collecting and processing eDNA samples.
  • Bioinformatics Data Analyses: Explore the world of eDNA data analysis and learn essential bioinformatics techniques.
  • Integrating eDNA with Other Biodiversity Data Types: Discover how eDNA can be effectively combined with other data sources for comprehensive biodiversity assessments.

Beyond the Think Tank: Movie Screening and Blue Pulse Networking Event

After the think tank, BIMS and KMFRI will host a Movie Screening of Harm in the Water, a documentary by BIMS that discusses the impacts of nutrient pollution on communities along the Mississippi River, and a Blue Pulse Networking Event at Pride Inn Paradise Resort. This three-hour gathering is an informal opportunity for think tank participants and other Symposium attendees to connect, build community, and foster collaborations in a relaxed atmosphere.

Organizers

The eDNA Think Tank is organized by a dedicated team of experts: Drs. Blandina Lugendo, Camille Gaynus, Frank Mirobo, Obakeng Molelu, and Thomas Mkare.
